Hey, guys! My name is Darren Nguyen. I'm the blogger behind the blog. I'm a freshman at the University of Oklahoma and I'm a Health & Exercise Science/Pre-Nursing Major. The best class I took last semester was Personal Health with Professor Jade Arellano. I enjoyed her class because she took a functional approach to health rather than a standard conventional one that one might learn in medical school or something equivalent. I got to learn all about healthy living and also about Professor Arellano's interesting lifestyle. My biggest accomplishment from last semester was getting a 4.0 GPA even though didn't deserve one. Over break I started and finished Bojack Horseman which was a pretty funny show. I find the dark humor of Bojack Horseman to be quite amusing. I also went to Fort Smith, Arkansas during the break and visited my good friend Brandi Tran. I don't have any favorite books because I haven't read for enjoyment since the sixth grade. My favorite movie is Up, and the best movie I've seen recently was Teen Beach Movie. I sing the songs from the soundtrack all the time. My favorite TV shows include The Office, Brooklyn Nine Nine, and Community. My favorite kind of music is indie pop or indie alternative music, but I dabble in many music genres. My favorite new music genre I have started listening to is Nu-Disco, a modern take on disco. My favorite musical artists include Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Kero Kero Bonito. One day, I hope to be a nurse practitioner. My goal is to open up a free clinic to serve those who cannot afford healthcare. My big dream career is to be the head coach of a professional League of Legends team. I have no pets, but I hope to have many pets in the future! My favorite animal is a pug, and I hope to one day have one. I also want to have a corgi in the future. They're so cute. My favorite foods include gourmet ramen, sushi, and asparagus. My least favorite foods are fast foods. They're so bad for you! I can't believe anybody would eat fast food for nearly every meal. My favorite hobbies include playing competitive video games, watching Netflix, and trying new foods. If I had more time, I would exercise more to tone my body or I would learn how to swim so I can play water polo! If I had an extra day for fun, I'd probably go play tennis with my dear friend Lexie Liebman. She's a doll!!
Hi Darren! Nice to meet you. I love dogs as well and was immediately drawn into your blog because of the cute pug picture. I have a new puppy named Dakota that I got last summer. He is a toy maltipoo and is so sweet. I think we also like a lot of the same TV shows. I finished Community a few summers ago and think that Brooklyn Nine-Nine is so funny! I think it's great that you want to be a nurse practitioner. That is such an important career and you have the ability to help so many people live better, healthier lives. Have a great semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Darren, I saw your new post pop up with the new template, so I came back to the Introduction and it's working now, and the new template looks really cool too I think! Yay!
ReplyDeleteNurse practitioners are the best IMO! I really like the way they have so much specialized knowledge, but at the same time they really know how to connect with patients as people. It sounds like that is the approach you were learning about in that Personal Health class too. And for sure we need more of that in the U.S. medical system!
I'm also a fan of pugs; have you seen the Men in Black movies? Frank the Pug is my favorite MIB character, and he even has his own webpage ha ha: Frank the Pug. Maybe you can write some stories this semester with pug dogs in them... which would be an excuse to include cute pug pictures in your posts!
Hey Darren,
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot in common! I just finished watching community for the second time, I love Donald Glover in that series. Congrats on almost being done with your first year at OU. This is actually my last semester so I can tell you that I goes by ridiculously fast so enjoy it while you can. OU has a really great tennis program and tennis facilities so you should take advantage of our courts in your free time!
Hey Darren!
ReplyDeleteFirst off- wow! Being a freshman is an incredible place to be. Congratulations! You are headed towards (and currently receiving) an experience that will be incredibly influential on your life. I am so glad you are here at OU to experience it. As a fifth-year senior let me tell you- enjoy every second of it and be thankful that you are here- in the bad times and the good. I am thrilled you got a 4.0 last semester, but you have to quit that not deserving shenanigans! Regardless of why you may feel that way, at the end of the day you got one. Which means that by definition you did deserve it. The flip side is that when (if) worse grades come, we have to carry that same mentality of accountability for it. Own the 4.0s, and own the less-than-4.0s. It'll all even out in the end. For growth to be maximized, you always have to be holding yourself accountable and reflecting on how it happened. Enjoy OU, focus on yourself, and no matter what happens remember that "it is what it is." But enough from an old fart like me. Boomer!
Darren,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading through your introduction. I think it is awesome that you are a freshman taking this course, and it sounds like you have an awesome major. I am sure you will enjoy your future years at OU. I think it is awesome that you want to be a Nurse Practitioner. I am starting the Physician’s Assistant program at OUHSC this summer, so we have pretty similar career goals. Best of luck in the future.

Hey, Darren!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you -- it sounds like you're a good student and a busy guy. Congrats on a successful first semester, the 4.0 isn't easy to achieve! Also, an eSports coach is a super interesting career idea. I used to play League with some friends and the competitive scene can get really cutthroat. We were never good enough to play competitively though. Good luck this semester!
Hi there Darren! I loved reading your introduction. I'm so glad there are people like you who want to work in the medical field- I mentioned on someone else's blog that it's so important, but I'm thankful that I don't have to do it! Also, I really admire your goal to make healthcare more accessible. I also love the office, and my husband got me to play League of Legends a little bit (although I am truly terrible at it). Good luck this semester!

Hello, Darren!
ReplyDeleteI must say that you have certainly found a picture to hook the reader in with that picture of Boo. I do not know who that lovable pug is, but I would certainly like to meet him. Congrats on achieving a 4.0 GPA last semester! I am confident when I say that if you really did not deserve the grade, then you would not have gotten it. I have heard good things about Bojack Horseman, so I am glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Darren!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you. I was just reading your post and mentioned corgis to a friend, and they freaked the heck out. Safe to say, you've chosen quite the future pet(s) that most people would agree with. It's awesome that you play League of Legends! I used to play a good amount back in the day. I just never have time anymore, as I'm sure you don't have as much time anymore either. Well anyway, best of luck in the course!

Hey Darren!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to OU. I hope your freshman year is off to a good start, and I’m sure with it being second semester you’re pretty well settled in to the rhythm of campus and classes. Congrats on the successful first semester!
Out of curiosity, what made you chose to go into Health and Exercise Science, with plans to attend nursing school after you graduate? I’m always curious as to why people chose their majors.
Best,
- JD
Hey there Darren!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading through your introduction. It is pretty cool that you are a freshman and taking this course and getting these pesky non-western civ. Courses out of the way. I know you will enjoy your years to come here at the University of Oklahoma. Best of luck with your future her at OU and I look forward to reading some of your stories!
Hey Darren,
ReplyDeleteI hope you are enjoying your freshman year here at OU. I saw you are a League of Legends fan. That is particularly interesting to me because I play Smite - a game very similar to LoL. The main difference is it is more of a 3rd person POV and it uses gods and goddesses from several pantheons of mythology. I am suddenly interested in Bojack Horseman after reading your story, and now your intro.
Good luck!
Brady
Hello, Darren!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting a 4.0 last semester--freshmen year is already pretty tough what with getting used to college life and everything, but it is even tougher when you have a difficult field of study like yours! I am also a dog lover and love the personality of pugs--they are such goofballs! I like dark comedy so I will give BoJack Horseman a shot when I get the chance! Awesome intro to yourself and I look forward to reading what all you write this semester!
Good job!
Hey Darren,
ReplyDeleteI love the Office! I have also heard really good things about Brooklyn Nine Nine and Community. Whenever I can get access to the right streaming service, I would love to watch them. Comedies are such a great way to relieve stress from day to day college worries. Great job on pulling off a 4.0! Hope that you can keep going!
Darren, it was really great getting to know you some through your introduction post. I think it is so cool that we are able to interact even though we are in two separate classes (I'm in Indian Epics). I think it is cool that having an online class like this allows us to do that. Again, it was great getting to know you some and the best of luck to you on your future endeavors.
