Johnny Cake by Joseph Jacobs

Before I take notes over this story, I have to say that Johnny Cake is actually a cake, but he can do all of the things that he does in this story. What did the mom put into the batter?

The story begins with a family of three: a mother, a father, and a son. The mother was baking and put the Johnny Cake into the oven. The boy was instructed to watch the cake while the mother and father tended to the garden. To be specific, they were hoeing potatoes. What a fun life they lived! Now, the son made a mistake. He wasn't completely watching the oven. Most of the time, the cake would just burn, but since this was a Johnny Cake, the cake popped out of the oven and began to run. The boy was startled and began to chase after it, causing a large ruckus in his household. Johnny Cake ran outside and into the street. The mother and father heard the large ruckus and also chased after Johnny Cake, but none of the family members were fast enough, and they grew tired, so they took a rest. Johnny Cake kept running and he came across two mine workers. He told them that he outran a mother, a father, and a little boy and that he could outrun them too! The two mine workers accepted the challenge and began to run after him, but Johnny Cake was too fast, and the mine workers grew tired, so they took a rest. Johnny Cake kept running and saw two diggers, people who dig holes. He told them that he outran all of the people before, and that he could outrun them too! The diggers accepted the challenge and began to run after him, but Johnny Cake was too fast, and the diggers grew tired, so they took a rest. This happened again with a bear and a wolf. Finally, Johnny Cake came across a fox. He gave his speech about who he has outran, and the fox told Johnny Cake that he couldn't hear him. So then, Johnny Cake stopped and came closer. He repeated himself, but the fox still couldn't hear him, so Johnny Cake went even closer. He repeated his speech, but at the end of it, the fox gobbled him up! This is a story about pride and sloth.
