The first article I read was Be a Mirror. This article discussed how teachers should use certain strategies to implement growth mindsets in their students, so that their students can become excellent readers. One takeaway from this article that I got was the strategy of taking yourself out of the feedback. The author noted that when putting yourself in the feedback, the listener may be trying to please you instead of working on themselves. I will implement this when giving feedback while coaching.
The second article I read was Five Reasons Why to Stop Saying Good Job. This article discussed why praising children is detrimental to their development through a psychological analysis. I thought this article was interesting because I think that parents are unable to make the change of not praising their children effectively due to the praising world we live in. Everything in our world promotes good behavior and looks down upon bad behavior, similar to saying, "good job" and "bad job." If a parent is to not praise their child, his or her child may grow to resent the parent because he or she receives praise from everyone but their parent. I believe that my mother is a parent who tries not to praise her child, for it is not only extremely difficult to please her but also her appreciation is rarely expressed, especially through words.
I believe that the manner of feedback that I have been given throughout my life has shaped my own idea of what feedback should look like, which is different from every other individual. I find my feedback to be much harsher than others due to difficulty finding phrases to express what I am trying to say more positively. Oftentimes, I'll give feedback very frankly, expressing my thoughts exactly without a filter. This can be difficult to listen to, especially when one has difficulty listening to feedback or one is not used to hearing feedback in this manner.

Darren,
ReplyDeleteI think feedback both positive and negative are incredibly important to shaping somebody. If we don't give each other feedback then we aren't progressing in the subject or really in life. I also think framing feedback is incredibly important. You want to say what you mean and critique but in a constructive way that encourages the other person.
